However, studies are showing the benefits of sleep extend beyond what we&#8217;ve known before. Ericsson&#8217;s high-impact study from\u00a01993 reported\u00a0that the best sleepers got about 8 and a half\u00a0hours. The average American\u00a0sleeps just\u00a0under seven hours each night.<\/p>\n<h3>Need More Energy?<\/h3>\n<p>Our energy comes from sleep, food, air, and water. If your\u00a0diet is\u00a0good\u00a0and you still feel tired, consider your sleep habits. Getting to sleep too late leaves you without enough strength the next day. Although you may &#8216;catch up&#8217;, the damage is already done&#8211;even more so if you get less than 6 hours. \u00a0Don&#8217;t let poor sleep habits drag you down!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sleep and\u00a0METABOLISM<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When you lose sleep, your body&#8217;s metabolic rate decreases\u00a0during the morning according to <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/oby.21198\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\">this 2015 study<\/a>. The researchers found\u00a0that the body tends to conserve caloric\u00a0energy when sleep is lost. In other words, getting enough sleep helps to balance your body&#8217;s metabolism and\u00a0maintain a healthy weight.<\/p>\n<h3>Sleep Fights Sickness<\/h3>\n<p>While we sleep, our bodies produce certain types of cytokines, which are\u00a0key regulators of our immune system. When we are sick, changes in production of cytokines and their effect on the serotonin system lead us to be more tired, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19209176\" target=\"_blank\">this 2009 study suggests<\/a>.
