Iyengar in his book\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Light-Life-Journey-Wholeness-Ultimate\/dp\/1594865248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Light on Life<\/a><\/em>\u00a0wrote, &#8220;It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence.&#8221; He emphasizes\u00a0using\u00a0posture to understand and transform yourself. No matter how poor your posture is, you can make it better. The benefits of doing so extend beyond your physical body.<\/p>\n<h3>Amazing Effects<\/h3>\n<p>Harvard faculty researcher Amy Cuddy describes these\u00a0benefits in her TED\u00a0talk\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjQ-Lnl9JPMAhXIbT4KHacQD6gQyCkIHjAA&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ted.com%2Ftalks%2Famy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are%3Flanguage%3Den&amp;usg=AFQjCNGK8EIIkubo6DgKW8p6R8vU87br6g&amp;sig2=MZh96hYNK2LKUMyQi4iizQ&amp;bvm=bv.119745492,d.cWw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>She compared\u00a0the hormonal effects of two minutes of adopting\u00a0a good posture\u00a0(high-power pose)\u00a0and a\u00a0poor posture (low-power pose):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Risk tolerance, which is the gambling, we find that when you are in the high-power pose condition, 86 percent of you will gamble. When you&#8217;re in the low-power pose condition, only 60 percent, and that&#8217;s a whopping significant difference. Here&#8217;s what we find on testosterone. From their baseline when they come in, high-power people experience about a 20-percent increase, and low-power people experience about a 10-percent decrease. So again, two minutes, and you get these changes. Here&#8217;s what you get on cortisol. High-power people experience about a 25-percent decrease, and the low-power people experience about a 15-percent increase. So two minutes lead to these hormonal changes that configure your brain to basically be either assertive, confident and comfortable, or really stress-reactive, and feeling sort of shut down. And we&#8217;ve all had the feeling, right? So it seems that our nonverbals do govern how we think and feel about ourselves, so it&#8217;s not just others, but it&#8217;s also ourselves. Also, our bodies change our minds.<\/p>\n<p>Does her conclusion sound familiar? It&#8217;s very similar to what Iyengar had to say about posture. Social psychology is lending support to the ancient ideas from\u00a0the Yogic tradition.<\/p>\n<h3>Surprising Synergy<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to notice that both Iyengar and Amy Cuddy describe a\u00a0process by which physical change causes mental and emotional change. This means it&#8217;s time to start practicing good posture as a means to an end, not only as an end in itself. You can experience a much happier, more balanced, and\u00a0relaxed lifestyle when you focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/feelgoodtoday.com\/blog\/better-posture-understanding-jandas-syndromes\/\">maintaining good posture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Get Started<\/h3>\n<p>Stand\u00a0with your back to a wall with feet shoulder-width apart. Breathe deeply and slowly while you extend your head directly upwards. Gently pull your head and shoulders directly back toward\u00a0the wall, tense your abs, and bend your knees slightly. Be as tall as possible and maintain this position\u00a0in a\u00a0relaxed state\u00a0for 3-5 minutes. You can easily fit this practice into your daily routine.
